Lake Bolsena, the largest lake in Europe among those of volcanic origins, is placed in the centre of an unspoilt area where history has left deep traces. For this reason, it has been chosen as the central element of one of the museum systems promoted by the Regione Lazio to foster the development of unitary cultural initiatives involving territories which present similar geographical and historical characteristics.
The Museum System of Lake Bolsena was born from the connection of a territorial museum, i.e. the museum of Bolsena, with other various theme museums, each endowed with its distinctive feature and aimed to convey a specific kind of message: geological, archaeological, historical demo-ethno-anthropological, environmental, artistic. From the union of these messages the information about the area and the itineraries which allow a more organic enjoyment of it, are completed, and the impression visitors get is of moving in a single, huge "outspread museum" where also the historical sites and the development of the area are given the right importance.
